Render unto Obama

"The sinner turns aside reproof and distorts the law to suit his purpose" (Sirach 32:17).

Bishop David Zubik of Pittsburgh, "Bishop: Obama Mandate Tells Catholics 'To Hell With You'", 1/31/2012
The Obama administration has just told the Catholics of the United States, "To Hell with you!" There is no other way to put it. To Hell with your religious beliefs. To Hell with your religious liberty. To Hell with your freedom of conscience.
Peggy Noonan, Wall Street Journal: "A Battle the President Can't Win", 2/5/2012
The president signed off on a Health and Human Services ruling that says that under ObamaCare, Catholic institutions -- including charities, hospitals and schools -- will be required by law, for the first time ever, to provide and pay for insurance coverage that includes contraceptives, abortion-inducing drugs and sterilization procedures. If they do not, they will face ruinous fines in the millions of dollars. Or they can always go out of business. In other words, the Catholic Church was told this week that its institutions can't be Catholic anymore.
Bill Donahue, Catholic League: "Obama's Contempt for Religious Liberty", 1/20/2012
Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius said today that aside from houses of worship, all other religious agencies and organizations will be required to provide sterilization and contraceptive services, including abortifacients, in their employee healthcare plans... With stunning magnanimity, Sebelius tells Catholic non-profits that they can take advantage of their one-year reprieve as long as they seek the blessings of the federal government. If they pass muster with the bureaucrats, then they have time to figure out how they can prostitute their religiously ground convictions, or prepare for bankruptcy. To top things off, after shoving the radical secular agenda down the throat of Catholics -- and other people of faith who share their concerns -- Sebelius congratulates the Obama administration for striking a "balance" between religious liberty and Obamacare.
Bishop Timothy Broglio of the Military Services USA, "Conscience Protection", 1/26/2012
The federal government, which claims to be "of, by, and for the people," has just dealt a heavy blow to almost a quarter of those people -- the Catholic population -- and to the millions more who are served by the Catholic faithful. It is a blow to a freedom that you have fought to defend and for which you have seen your buddies fall in battle... In so ruling, the Administration has cast aside the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, denying to Catholics our Nation's first and most fundamental freedom, that of religious liberty. And as a result, unless the rule is overturned, we Catholics will be compelled to choose between violating our consciences or dropping health coverage for our employees (and suffering the penalties for doing so). The Administration’s sole concession was to give our institutions one year to comply. We cannot -- we will not -- comply with this unjust law. People of faith cannot be made second-class citizens.
Bishop Timothy Dolan of New York, Wall Street Journal: "ObamaCare and Religious Freedom", 1/25/2012
The Catholic Church defends religious liberty, including freedom of conscience, for everyone. The Amish do not carry health insurance. The government respects their principles. Christian Scientists want to heal by prayer alone, and the new health-care reform law respects that. Quakers and others object to killing even in wartime, and the government respects that principle for conscientious objectors. By its decision, the Obama administration has failed to show the same respect for the consciences of Catholics and others who object to treating pregnancy as a disease.
Michael Sean Winters, National Catholic Reporter: "Compromise? Not So Fast", 2/8/2012
I am all for reaching a political solution, rather than a court-ordered solution, but this is politics folks, not a congenial conversation over a game of bridge. To stick with that analogy, the White House did not bid one no trump to open this game, it bid five hearts. Last month, they went for the whole enchilada, refusing any kind of workable compromise, going back on the President's promise to yield a decision the Catholic Church could live with, and giving in to the most extreme position articulated by groups that are -- and should be -- enemies of the Church. Yes, I said that correctly. Groups like NARAL and Emily's List, which exist to further the availability of abortion, should consider the Catholic Church an enemy and, in this great, free country of ours, they have every right to pursue their political goals and to defeat the Catholic Church in its efforts to restrict and eventually eliminate abortion. And, while I do not believe the President is himself an anti-Catholic, there is no denying that in this decision he listened to those who are.
Richard Land, "Southern Baptist leader: If Obama mandate isn't changed, Christians will go to jail", 2/7/2012
It is now in the providence of God. Our responsibility is to stand and say, "We will not comply with this. We want the law changed, or else we're going to write our letters from the Nashville jail, just like Dr. King wrote his from the Birmingham jail." We will not comply.
